Statement on NIAID Director Anthony Fauci  

The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association are immensely grateful for Dr. Anthony Fauci’s contributions to the identification, treatment and containment of infectious diseases through his 38 years of leadership of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Fauci’s invaluable effects on the field of infectious diseases can and will be felt across generations. He has championed NIAID’s research and response through the front lines of every major infectious diseases outbreak in the last few decades — including HIV, swine flu, Ebola, Zika, and most recently, COVID-19. Under his leadership, NIAID has saved millions of lives worldwide through research breakthroughs in diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.

Thanks to his influence and support of a rigorous but compassionate scientific process, HIV was transformed from a death sentence to a chronic condition, and we now have the tools to end HIV as an epidemic in the U.S. and around the globe. His engagement with advocates and compassion shown to people with lived experience gave voice to those most affected and expanded treatment to many who were previously unable to access it, not only for HIV, but for many diseases that are rife with stigma.

In addition to his scientific and clinical achievements, Dr. Fauci has expertly taken on the challenging role of effectively communicating to the public while navigating new and emerging scientific evidence and has done so with integrity and respect. He has consistently emphasized the need for outbreak preparedness, including the need to bolster the infectious diseases workforce.

Dr. Fauci’s commitment to service and dedication to public health are unparalleled.
