IDSA and HIVMA Oppose Government Interference in Health Care Providers’ Ability to Provide Evidence-based Care

The Infectious Diseases Society of America and HIV Medicine Association strongly urge Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to stop government interference in the patient-health care provider relationship by withdrawing the order released last week that classifies medical treatment provided to transgender youth as “child abuse.” The new policy does not reflect the latest medical standards for transgender individuals and places the government between health care providers and their ability to treat their patients.

The policy also compounds the stigma and discrimination that contribute to the serious health inequities that transgender individuals experience, putting them at higher risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in addition to suicide, substance use disorders and other mental health conditions. IDSA and HIVMA strongly support the rights of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, to access quality, competent health care services free from stigma and discrimination. We urge policymakers to focus on advancing policies that protect these rights to improve the individual health and public heath of all Americans.
