HIVMA Recognizes Excellence in HIV Clinical Education and Research With 2022 Awards
The HIV Medicine Association presented awards to David H. Spach, MD, and Sara Hurtado Bares, MD, FIDSA during IDWeek 2022 to recognize their contributions to the field of HIV medicine in clinical education and research.
HIVMA Clinical Educator Award: David H. Spach, MD
The Clinical Educator Award recognizes significant achievement in the areas of HIV clinical care and provider education. The 2022 recipient is David H. Spach, MD.
Dr. Spach is a professor of medicine in the Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington; clinical director and principal investigator of the Mountain West AIDS Education & Training Center at UW Medicine; and a clinician in the University of Washington’s Harborview Medical Center Ryan White HIV Clinic.
Dr. Spach has advanced HIV education and training with the development of the National HIV Curriculum funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration and three educational websites funded by CDC: the National STD Curriculum, Hepatitis C Online and Hepatitis B Online. He continues to serve as the editor-in-chief of the National HIV Curriculum. Designed to develop the future HIV workforce, the National HIV Curriculum is widely used by training programs throughout the United States and globally. Many academic institutions have adopted this curriculum to teach residents and infectious diseases fellows. The National HIV Curriculum has reached more than 55,000 learners who have registered on the site. The other three educational websites combined have reached more than 97,000 registered users.
In addition, through his leadership of the Mountain West AIDS Education & Training Center, Dr. Spach oversees innovative education and training for health care providers in the 10 states covered by the center. He also serves as a mentor to many of the health care providers who use the center.
Dr. Spach has received many awards, including the Ryan White National AIDS Education and Training Center Award, and from the University of Washington, the Marvin Turck Outstanding Teaching Award and the Department of Medicine Paul Beeson Teaching Award.

HIVMA Research Award: Sara Hurtado Bares, MD, FIDSA
The Research Award recognizes outstanding contributions to HIV medicine in clinical or basic research. This year’s honoree is Sarah Hurtado Bares, MD, FIDSA.
Dr. Bares is being recognized for her work as a prolific and collaborative researcher advancing studies to increase understanding of HIV-related sex differences, HIV and aging and the cardiometabolic complications of HIV. Her research often seeks to answer valuable but overlooked clinical questions related to women with HIV.
Dr. Bares is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and co-director of the Microbiology & Infectious Diseases Blocks in the Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum. She also leads the HIV research team at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which conducts both NIH and industry-funded clinical trials. Her CV boasts 43 publications, many of which are mentored publications that she has completed with trainees.
Dr. Bares received the AIDS Clinical Trial Group Minority HIV Investigator Mentoring Program Award in 2018 and remains actively engaged in the ACTG.
